The $9.3-million joint fire, police and ambulance station coming to the south end will be certified green. At least that's what the city hopes will come out of a variety of innovative features they're planning to put on the station. Those include:
- cutting energy use by about half;
- cutting water use by a third;
- producing 5% of the energy onsite, through wind or solar;
- using recycled, local, renewable materials;
- diverting construction waste from landfill;
- using solvent-free chemicals;
- etc.
Read more about this in the paper, perhaps tomorrow or Monday.

Keep spending our money city hall!!

I take issue with the comment above. Fire, police, and ambulance services are classified as essential services - they must be provided. Much of the capital cost of these services is already covered by development charges, not the tax payer. When it comes to the annual operating costs, those are covered by the tax payers, so by combining these services under one roof, plus incorporating the green initiatives, a lot of "our money" is being saved on an annual basis. "Fryd" needs to get better informed before taking a shot at the politicians at city hall.

Marilyn:Spend more and more tax dollars to save;seems somewhat illogical?So,let me see,only one-third of the required water needed to extinguish a fire will be used then council can allocate $1.3Million to the reconstruction costs of the burned out building?Let's just get the long,long,long overdue southend firehall built,manned and equipped so that the City can,finally,meet the response time for Citizens in the area!

Save the misinterpretations of the above facts and figures for those NeoCon columnists - rapidly diminishing in numbers - to twist in their spasms of negativity in this paper. We all know of their private little missions and so can yawn at them on a regular basis.
Instead, read the information before you buffoon it! I believe that the "cutting water use by a third" refers to water use within the "joint fire, police and ambulance station ". It has nothing to do with what is used in fighting fires.

Brian:You're soooo astute to have caught this watered down version of the intent!?How's the Green Party's attempt at getting an elected member of parliament;if they do,there'll probably be another parking garage erected in Guelph in honour of that event,perhaps in Exhibition Park?
