The local arts community is all abuzz about a proposal which could see the former Uniroyal Chemicals plant on Huron Street turned into an arts centre.
It seems a broker representing potential buyers has put out some feelers, which is generating some excitement.
The official listing for the property notes there can not be residential development on the 6.4-acre site (likely, I'm thinking, due to its past as a chemical testing laboratory) but an arts and culture centre seems like a wonderful reuse of the sizable property.
In this photo, the main building which sits along Alice Street is shown as Building 3. The white line running from it to the left edge of the photo is Huron Street.
We'll have more in the paper tomorrow.

If you wouldn't want to live there because of possible pollution, would you want to spend eight or ten hours a day there working on your art? If it is polluted would you want your kid going to an art class there?

yeah, uniroyal doesnt exactly have the best environmental track record around these parts. common, and legal, disposal practice in the elmira uniroyal plant at that time was 40 gallon drums buried out back. poisoned the aquifer. could be a very expensive remediation here too.
hats off to the developers if they can clean it up proper. i mean, someone should clean it up, right?
