Despite a direction from council last month that would have allowed senior staff to hand out construction projects without going to tender, it seems there has been some back-tracking on the idea.
CAO Hans Loewig, who initially recommended he be given sole authority to award contracts for projects covered under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, told me today those projects to be done this year will actually go to tender, but the closing dates will be dramatically shortened to allow work to proceed quickly.
"We've talked to the builders and they have strongly encouraged us to remain with the competitive process ... and that's what we'll do," Loewig said.
Staff will still award the contracts without council approval for those six infrastructure works going ahead this year.
We'll have more in the paper tomorrow.
