We have an interesting piece in the paper today by Jeff Outhit at the Waterloo Region Record.
It seems Waterloo councillors aren't too impressed that they are paying Guelph to process organic waste that is not being processed. This year Guelph is receiving about 1.3 million regional dollars for nothing, because of the terms of the processing contract which requires Waterloo to pay for 20,000 tonnes of processing each year whether they send that much or not.
They're not even close to that, as it seems Waterloo residents aren't keen on using the green bins.
Complicating matters, and as we told you recently, Guelph is hoping to double-sell the unused capacity to someone else until Waterloo needs it.
A regional councillor called this proposal "unsavoury."
I'm sure Guelph taxpayers, who fronted the cost of the bigger-than-we'll-ever-need facility, do not share this view.
