City votes not to rezone former Lafarge site

All councillors present voted to support staff's recomendation to reject the application to rezone the former Lafarge lands.

Silvercreek Guelph Developments had asked the land to be rezoned in order to put big box and smaller retail stores on the space.

The debate now goes to the Ontario Municipal Board next week.

The city is considering making treated wastewater available to so-called bulk water users, for instance for watering soccer fields. It would mean less demand for water supply, but perhaps more importantly a use for our wastewater.

The city's big problem when it comes to growth is finding a place to put all the treated wastewater. If we keep conserving, we can get to the point where the Speed River can accept treated wastewater from 165,000 people, but not too many more, city staff say.

That could conflict with how much the province wants us to grow. But finding a place other than the river to put treated wastewater could mean we'd overcome that logjam.
