Mercury male newsmaker of the year

Newsmaker2
GUELPH — It would be easy for Dave Scott-Thomas to have a bit of an ego.
The phenomenally successful University of Guelph cross-country and track coach saw his teams capture four Canadian university championships this year — the only four won by the school.
He also coached two of his Speed River Track and Field Club runners — Eric Gillis and Taylor Milne — to Olympic berths, helped organized five community charity runs and for the second straight year hosted an impeccably-ran Canadian Cross Country Championships.
Yet the Guelph Mercury’s male Newsmaker of the Year remains almost terminally humble.
“I’m really proud to be part of this town,” said Scott-Thomas, 44, who at the recent Canadian Cross Country Championships spent a chunk of his day delivering pizza and drinks to volunteers on remote parts of the course.
“There’s a nice ethos here. It’s a real healthy vibe.”

DeLaval named head coach of Varsity Blues

TORONTO - The University of Toronto Faculty of Physical Education and Health announced today the appointment of Greg DeLaval as an athletic instructor and the new head coach of the Varsity Blues football program effective January 1, 2009.

Serving as interim head coach for the 2008 season, DeLaval helped end the longest losing streak in CIS history. He led the previously 0-49 Blues to their first win in seven seasons and guided the team to a record of 2-6, recording his first CIS victory in his first game as the Blues bench boss on September 1, 2008, defeating the Waterloo Warriors, 18-17, in a thriller at Varsity Centre.

Gryphons head downtown

The University of Guelph's varsity hockey teams will play an OUA doubleheader against the York Lions at the Sleeman Centre next month.
The first Downtown College Hockey event is set for Jan. 31 with the women playing at 4 p.m. and the men following at 7:30 p.m.
The Gryphons haven't played in downtown Guelph since the Gryphon Centre opened in January 1989.
Prior to that, the Gryphon men played league games at Memorial Gardens on Carden Street.
The women played their league games then in a small on-campus arena joined to the Mitchell Athletics Centre where the volleyball courts are now.
Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 students and there are special rates and seating for alumni and university staff.

Goalie's throat cut

The Canadian Press

WINDSOR — A university goaltender is in fair condition in a Windsor hospital after having his throat accidentally slashed during a game.

Kurt Jory, of Brandon, Man., was hurt Saturday while in net for the Brock University Badgers from St. Catharines, Ont., against the Windsor Lancers.

The 21-year-old netminder suffered a severed vein in his neck when he was clipped by a skate during a goalmouth scramble in the third period.

The Badgers say Jory is in full recovery after undergoing surgery and will return to St. Catharines in a few days.

The Canadian Hockey League requires players to wear neck guards, but Canadian Interuniversity Sport does not have a similar requirement.
