He's not an SNL host, but he plays one on TV.

Tomorrow, Saturday Night Live marks its post-holiday return to the airwaves with Neil Patrick Harris as host and Taylor Swift as musical guest.

You may remember Taylor Swift as the country diva who Fergus singer-songwriter Ryan Laird entreated to produce his album with a giant billboard in Nashville.

I can't wait. Though I'm not a big country fan and barely know who Taylor Swift is, Neil Patrick Harris is just awesome. Do not lie and tell me you didn't watch Doogie Howser, M.D.

OK, I suppose some blog readers might have been too young to appreciate the synthesizer soundtrack, giant sneakers and completely ridiculous plots relating to a teenage super-genius who became a doctor before he could legally drive. The best part of Doogie Howser, though, was when he would type in his computerized diary at the end of every episode, to reflect on the activities of the episode. It followed a very specific formula: Type-type-type. Type-type-type. Typity-type. *Pause to reflect. Nod sagely.* Type-type-type-type-type.

Like so:

This video begs the question: Shouldn't a child prodigy be able to type faster than that?

If you've followed Harris's career at all since then, you might recognize him as... himself — or an exaggerated version of himself. He played a drug-loving, binge-drinking, sex machine party animal version of himself in the 2004 stoner comedy Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. That led to a role as rich New York playboy Barney Stinson on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

This last year was a big one for Harris. He reprised his role as "himself" in Harold & Kumar 2: Escape from Guantanamo Bay, starred as the title character in Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon's online serial Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, and had some awesome moments on How I Met Your Mother. Last season, SNL cast member Will Forte guest starred as Barney's new wing man, Randy. From there, it seemed like only a matter of time before Harris hosted SNL and I can't wait.

It's going to be legend — wait for it — dary.

Wouldn't it be cool if Taylor Swift and Ryan Laird could meet on SNL?? Then we could all watch their first meeting!!! I have been following the Ryan Laird story and watched his interviews and have become a huge fan. I hope we get to see some fairy tale ending to this story.
