Storm's Cody McNaughton gets mandatory five-game suspension for inadvertently shooting puck into crowd last Saturday in Peterborough.
Shot it towards the boards after a close offiside call, but the puck took off in to the stands.
Peterborough's Clark Seymour apparently also got 5 for the same thing in the same game. I saw Seymour get kicked out, but didn't realize that's what it was for.
Even if it's accidental, it's an automatic five games. Then it's reviewed to see if more is necessary.

That's just great, when is this guy going to use his head. Does he know we are in a playoff race?

Play a hockey game at the pace he does and you may be more sympathetic Willy J.
Posted by: OtLR9 | January 18, 2012 at 12:37 PM
He shot the puck over the boards after the play stopped

OtLR9, you are being a bit harsh.
We need our 19 year olds in their fourth year to use some discipline especially in a playoff race. Cody has taken a few needless penalties that have hurt us in the first half of the year.

I agree with stormtracker, but OtLR9 makes a good point. It is hard to put oneself in his shoes. But, ya, penalties are definitely an issue.

He is a teenager for goodness sakes! I don't think it's OtLR9 who's being harsh; these teenagers have more going on than what is on the ice!

I agree with both OtLR9 and Willy J's comments. But being fair we are not in Cody's skates!(shoes) So we cannot speak for him but maybe it was just a frustration thing on his part. How many times in life have we done something in frustration and reacted only to realize later we should have known better. And we are adults with many years of common sense to relie on! I can only imagine the pressure these young men are under and they are just kids at heart. There are other players who are taking way more stupid penaltys than Cody is and they are not "benched". Granted Cody seems to be the "face" of the Storm in the media via all the interviews he does and is held accountable to us the fans when he does not live upto our standards. But give him credit when he makes a mistake he takes his lumps and you have to respect him for that. And I think there are other players who deserve some of the fans critisizm more than Cody. Just my 3 cents worth! Might not mean much but it's my opinion.

Yes he is a teenager. I don't have any idea what is going on in his life beside hockey -- that's not my business. Even being a teenager with things going on outside of the rink doesn't get any sympathy from me. What does get sympathy from me is the fact that while he made a bad choice there is no way that McNaughton intended to shoot the puck into the stands. He made a spur of the moment reaction out of frustration. He knows the rules and I would hope he will know better next time. As sad as this sounds, there were players over the years that didn't know any better.
We have passionate fan's here in Guelph and I can understand their concerns over a veteran player being out of the lineup for an extended period of time, during a playoff run where every point is a potential season breaker. I would think that Cody might be thinking of the fan's but I'm almost certain his thoughts are about his team mates and how it will be killing him watching the next five games from the stands.
Thank God that no one was hurt.

passionate fan's? are kidding? maby if they make some noise at the start of the game,
instead of sitting on there hands waiting for something to happen, the team might have a better home record. Just my opinon.

(are you kidding) sorry.
Posted by: bob | January 19, 2012 at 12:18 AM
sorry folks the Teenager comments go out the window the minute they sign a semi-pro contract with the an OHL club. Granted it was a mistake I don't think Cody meant to do it but as the leader of the team how many leaders around the OHL have been suspended for something as stupid as this? Hopefully he learns his lesson but in all honesty while he may be a veteran on this team that sits in the bottom 5 teams in the league hes no more then a 3rd liner at best on any other club so its possible that people need to relax and realize that it may be a bit much to expect him to be a top tier guy.

This team is in the bottom five because the have a lot of rookies. They are building for the future. Just think put him on one of the stronger older teams he might have a lot more points too.Already has all most a point a game, what do you want from him point wise.

Don't confuse passionate and noisy, Bob. Someone can be one without the other.

call it as it is....
(comment edited)... i guess it was no different when you signed your contract a McDs....

Good for you Danny too bad your grammar and spelling are so lack luster they probably would have a difficult time reading your resume for the fry stand position at McDonald's!

Now back on topic.... I am not jabbing at Cody just simply saying there is a reason why no one came calling for his services on deadline day, is he over achieving absolutely is he still a decent play absolutely just not a first liner and hey their not all first liners its not a shot at Cody hes producing about as much as one can expect out of somebody of his caliber.
Posted by: call it as it is | January 20, 2012 at 01:02 AM
I understand his frustration in doing what he did. I also understand that the rule is in place to prevent someone getting hurt BUT 5 games!! A little step don't you think? I'm sure it was not done intentionaly. I 'm sure I might do it too, thinking it may hit the glass. In the heat of the game the players do things at the moment not really thinking .

Call it as it is....
I guess that is why I did not get into Hamburger U.... You take a shot at all of them when you suggest a 16 to 20 year old is excused from being a teenager because he has signed what you consider to be a semi-pro contract. ( making $50 bucks a week)
Cody, like any other young kid made a mistake, in the heat of the moment he flipped the puck in to the crowd. Now you take that situation and turn it into a conversation about him not being good enough.... (post edited).
"I am not jabbing at Cody just simply saying there is a reason why no one came calling for his services on deadline day" No, not a jab.....

To be fair, teams did come calling at the deadline for McNaughton.

It is amazing to see the drivel that oozes up out of the mire concerning young hockey players’ errors. Cody fired the puck over the boards intentionally or by mistake. That is it! Leave it there. He got a penalty and a suspension. He is playing OHL Junior A … the highest level open to teenagers in Canada,
I would like to know the hockey credentials of those who have brought down such harsh comments regarding Cody and others on this blog.
One of the most vocal on the McNaughton suspension was quoted on this blog as saying “LOL Holland is a laugh and a half he will never make the NHL.” on February 10, 2011 at 09:56 PM . I would have thought that this person would be a little more circumspect in making such drastic calls after that remark proved wrong.
Posted by: senjangolfer | January 21, 2012 at 05:45 PM
Its funny you should mention Holland senhangolfer last time i checked he has played a whaping 4 games in the N .... He may play a phew here and there but his work ethic or lack there of will prevent him from sticking it out

Everyone talks about Cody's dicsipline, personally i think theres been a big difference since his benching a few weeks back.....but yet I can't believe that NOONE talks about the biggest problem on our team....PEDAN !!!, this guy is not even that good, he has an attitude , and this guy has taken more stupid penalties then anyone, gets caught up ice all the time, and quite frankly is the biggest liability we have, but thats ok !!, continue to reward this guy with all the ice time he wants
Posted by: JB | January 23, 2012 at 09:41 AM
JB...
I Disagree that Pedan is not that good, he actually has a tonne of skill... That said I totally agree that he is very undisciplined, and seems to react before ever thinking of the consequences....
Posted by: Danny | January 23, 2012 at 01:07 PM
Danny ...I guess we can agree to disagree....he's physical, and has a cannon...thats about the only thing i like so far....he just doesnt make good decisions with the puck most of the time and well the penalties is enough to make you go BANANAS....I just find he costs the team more than he helps it , and for a veteran with a lot rookies on the team ....NOT very good leadership AT ALL, if anything our rookies are leading the way in the discipline category....just my opinion
Posted by: JB | January 23, 2012 at 01:47 PM
I can recall of 3 time this year that Pedan has taken the 2nd penalty to go down 5 on 3 and has cost us late in games , not something you want when your battling for a playoff spot....and Im sure there is some talent with him , that maybe a couple of games off might bring out. It worked for McNaughton and Kosmachuk and they were no where near as bad
