Here is a letter to the editor from Marty Burke. I expect it will be published in Tuesday's edition of the Guelph Mercury.
Dear editor,
I can certainly vouch for the qualities that Andrew Scheer will bring to the Speaker's chair in Canada's House of Parliament.
Andrew is a good friend that I have known for since 2004 when I played a small role in helping him win his first election in Regina. He is a great husband and father and, as has been pointed out numerous times in the media of late, is a student of parliamentary procedure and history. These characteristics were intertwined when he named his first born son Thomas- after the patron saint of politicians Saint Thomas More.
Andrew is a genuinely likeable fellow who strives to put aside partisanship for the sake of the business of the nation.
And what of the next session of parliament? I believe that Canada, under the calm and effective leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, could well be entering an golden age in which we reach the "broad sunlit uplands" as Churchill once said. I am convinced that these next eight or more years of Conservative majority governments will see Canada domestically move back to a society in which we enjoy all of the rights of Canadian citizenship but we will be asked to live up to our responsibilities as well. Internationally, I believe we will play a vital role as an interlocutor in significant world not seen since the post Second World War years- long gone are the embarrassing days when Liberals roamed the world cooing at any tinpot tyrant that would have them. Economically, although we certainly don't control many of the forces that can buffet us, I am confident we can continue to lead the western world. Our business community, eager to have the certainty of a government that gets the idea that prudent, timely steps are how you grow an economy- not wacky, left-wing, pie in the sky notions- will now be comfortable taking the opportunities and spend the capital necessary to create the jobs which will allow us to increase the standard of living of all our families.
And what of Guelph's Liberal MP? Not much. Squatting in a dark corner of parliament, surrounded by the crumbs of his last place party- isolated, ignored, inconsequential.
It is springtime in Canada! I have never been so optimistic about the future of our country as I am at this moment.
God bless our wonderful country!
Talk about a sore loser. Nothing like taking a parting shot at your competition. I have never been a Frank Valeriote fan, but a least he is gracious in victory. Seems to me that Marty Burke has no respect for the opinions of the citizens of Guelph. Makes me ashamed I voted for the guy.

Wow! What a dork. What is wrong with the Conservative Party that they couldn't come up with a better candidate? Not only is he a sore loser, but I don't see any evidence that he has even tried to understand the other side of the political fence.
People might find it odd, but I have a lot of sympathy for the conservative argument that we need to have a strong economy in order to do various things. I also believe that entrepeneurship is a a very good thing. What bothers me about many conservatives, however, is the blythe way they seem to be happy in their total and utter ignorance of other issues---such as the need for environmental stewardship and compassion for the people who simply cannot compete in our fast-paced, competitive society.
Politics should be a balancing act of a whole range of different issues. But increasingly it is an exercise in willful blindness. This is not going to end well----.

I don't know where to start... What a disappointing letter. The citizens of Guelph fairly voted Frank Valeriote to represent them in parliament, and I would hope that Marty Burke would have the integrity to respect the democratic process. Given that Guelph was the most scandalous ridding in Ontario during the election, it is clear that Mr. Burke and his local conservative associates have no such respect.

Marty Burke, underscoring once again why he was completely and utterly unelectable to the people of Guelph. The Mercury is under no obligation to publish his letters. Perhaps they can save him from himself and just ignore him. He does his party no service.

Eight or more years? God I hope not.

Marty the three time loser at the Federal Level shows that he has 60% of class - the last three letters.
What else can you say about a loser who did not even have the grace to cOngratulate the winner.
Hopefully in the next election rhe local Tories will find a good candidate to run rather than this loser.
Just a thought - Is Marty sucking up to Stevie in hopes of getting a Senate appointment? He sure sings the words Harper loves to hear.
As to Senate reform - End the useless vestige of the past, it is no longer needed. We do not need a bunch of mindless order takers, bowers and scrapers to undo the majority will of the elected house as happened last year after Harper loaded the Senate with sheep to vote his way. What ever happened to his claim that he would never appoint the faithfull and mindless followers of his desires? The Senate oath is to the Queen not the Prime Minister. as for Harper well the voter gets what they deserve. Watch for more erosions oF democracy BY Harper - the cancelling of the debate on the throne speech is just another example of whyHARPER CANNOT BE TRUSTED.

Please don't publish letters from Marty Burke anymore. His thoughts are unimportant and irrelevant to the conversation of Guelph, and Canada. His letters are terrible examples, especially for his own children, on how to behave when one does not get what they want.
