Here's a column I wrote about the history of the Mercury last year.
Here is a good column by a fellow Torstar journalist, Chantal Hebert, on the state of the media in this country and what she feels that means for Canada.
This Marsha Leaderman column in The Globe and Mail is also a provocative piece on the state of mainstream media.
Thank you for your years of service in covering the goings-on in and about Guelph. We will miss you!

Roy: Bear in mind that the web-edition will continue. My heart sank when I first saw the headline, but print editions of a number of quality newspapers are redundant.
Fortunately, all is not lost for the Merc. I suspect the print demise has been writing on the wall for some time, the refurbish of the Tribune's web publication software portended something of that nature, and it turns out to be that the Tribune survives in print, but not the Merc. The Trib is much more a creature of print advertising.

No sooner did I finish the prior post, and felt guilty that I didn't express emotions of loss, and resolved to write something more pragmatic later, and lo and behold, checking at the Globe's on-line latest, forth headline from the lead:

Phil, thank you for your outstanding service in leading the Guelph Mercury to editorial excellence for so many years, despite that many challenges that you faced, especially the constant cutbacks on staffing. It's a sad day now for all of the staff and the city as well. The impact of this will be felt for a long time to come. Good luck and God bless all of you.

Many thanks to all the staff a the Mercury, past & present, for your faithfulness to our community. I will be saddened to see the closure on Friday. On-line news is fine but it isn't quite the same as relaxing and "feeling" the newspaper in your hands, taking time to read it. I will be mourning for some time to come. God bless you.
